5th graders at Lee Hall have been given an exciting opportunity to meet the acclaimed Dr. Ben Carson, pediatric neurosurgeon who grew up in inner city Detroit. Dr. Carson struggled growing up, but through determinitaion and hard work became an extremely successful individual. Interested 5th graders joined a book club, and over the month of January these students have been reading Dr. Carson autobiography, Gifted Hands. This is a difficult book, we have met weekly to discuss and have discussion boards about the book on ThinkQuest.
On February 9th through videoconferencing students will have the opportunity to interview Dr. Carson about his book and life. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience for them. On Saturday, February 7th a TV movie of the book Gifted Hands will air on TNT at 8:00pm with Cuba Gooding jr. playing Dr. Ben Carson.
